Using Hyperlinks

Hyperlinks provide a way to link external data to a feature on the map. For example, by having a map layer that contains points for cities it is possible for one of the data attributes to point to the name of an external image file that contains a photograph. A hyperlink could be enabled to show the image of the city when clicking on said feature on the map. Hyperlinks are not limited to images. They can contain websites, word processing documents, spreadsheets or any other file.

Steps For Setting Up A Hyperlink

  1. Right-click on the layer in the legend. A new menu will popup.
  2. Click on Set Hyperlink. The Hyperlinks dialog will be displayed.
  3. Check the Support Hyperlinks For This Layer checkbox.
  4. Set the Hyperlink base path or URL. For example, if the map data contains a file name, such as MyCity.jpg, AccuGlobe needs to know where to look for this file, and it uses the base path to locate the file.
  5. The prefix, field drop-down boxes and suffixes are used to build the name of the file or URL to look for, based on the attribute data for a feature.
  6. Sample:
A map layer has two fields, FILEPRE and FILESUF. For a map feature assume the value of these fields are CityImage and 01 respectively. On the hard drive we have an image called CityImage_01.png in the c:\Images folder. For this example the base path would be set to c:\Images. Prefix would be blank. Field 1 would be FILEPRE. Suffix 1 would be an underscore character (_). Field 2 would be FILESUF. Suffix 2 would be .png. When a user clicks on the feature with the Hyperlink tool all of these values will be appended together, so we would end up with c:\Images\CityImage_01.png as the hyperlinked document.
  7. Set the Hyperlink type. AccuGlobe processes type Image by opening the image as a thumbnail under the Hyperlink tab (next to the Legend tab). Type URL is processed by attempting to open the file in a web browser. By setting the type to open with the associated Windows application, the operating system will determine which program will open the document, based on the documents file extension.
  8. Click Apply.

Steps For Using A Hyperlink

  1. Click on the Hyperlink button Hyperlink button on the MapTools toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over a feature on the map and click on it. The hyperlinked document will be displayed.
