Copying And Pasting Features And Attributes
When in edit mode it is possible to copy features and their attributes to new features, as well as copy attributes between existing features on the same layer.
Steps To Copy And Paste A Feature
Follow these steps to create an exact copy of a feature and it's attributes. The new feature will sit directly on top of the old feature as the geometries will be identical.
- Click on the layer in the legend so it becomes selected. The layer must contain line geometries.
- On the Editing toolbar, click Start Editing. For shapefiles only one person can edit the file at a time. Also, if permissions on the shapefile prohibit read/write access you will receive an error when attempting to edit the layer.
- Use one of the selection tools to select one feature. This is the feature that will be copied.
- Click on the Copy And Paste Attributes button on the editing toolbar.
- The Copy & Paste Data dialog will be displayed. Click on the Copy From Active Layer's Selected Record button.
- Click the Check All button to copy all of the attributes to the new feature. Alternatively, click on the checkboxes in the Stored Attributes list to copy just some of the attribute data.
- Click the Paste As New Feature button.

- To copy the geometry click on the checkbox under the Stored Geometry section.
- Use one of the selection tools to select one or more features. This is the feature that the attributes will be copied to.
- Click the Paste To Active Layer's Selected Record(s) button.
