Modifying Existing Graphics

After creating geometry graphic shapes on the map, it is a simple task to change their shape and properties. The steps outlined below explain the basic steps to manipulate the graphics.

Steps To Move a Shape

  1. Click on the Selection Pointer tool on the drawing toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over the graphic on the map. For shapes such as a polygon, the mouse can be anywhere over the shape, including the outline or the center. For lines, the mouse must be directly over the line. Click the left mouse button and hold it down.
  3. Move the mouse. The graphic will move with the mouse.
  4. Once the graphic is in the desired location, release the mouse button.


Steps To Add A New Point To A Shape

Note: This does not apply to point graphics. Line graphics must have a minimum of two points, and all other shapes must have a minimum of three points.
  1. Click on the Selection Pointer tool on the drawing toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over the graphic on the map and single click the left mouse button. The shape will highlight and grab handles will be displayed at the vertices.
  3. Move the mouse over the line that connects to two grab handles and click the right mouse button.
  4. From the popup menu, select Add Point. A new point will be added to the graphic.


Steps To Remove An Existing Point From A Shape

Note: This does not apply to point graphics. Line graphics must have a minimum of two points, and all other shapes must have a minimum of three points.
  1. Click on the Selection Pointer tool on the drawing toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over the graphic on the map and single click the left mouse button. The shape will highlight and grab handles will be displayed at the vertices.
  3. Move the mouse over the grab handle that represents the point to be deleted.
  4. From the popup menu, select Delete Point.


Steps To Change The Geometry Of A Shape

  1. Click on the Selection Pointer tool on the drawing toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over the graphic on the map and single click the left mouse button. The shape will highlight and grab handles will be displayed at the vertices.
  3. Move the mouse over the grab handle that represents the point to be moved. Click and hold the left mouse button.
  4. Move the mouse to the new location for the point. Release the mouse button to complete the move operation.


Steps To Change The Properties Of A Shape

  1. Click on the Selection Pointer tool on the drawing toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over the graphic on the map and single click the right mouse button.
  3. From the popup menu select Format Shape.
  4. The Format Shape dialog will be displayed. Modify the color, opacity, style and size properties accordingly. Some options may be grayed out, depending on the type of graphic selected.


Steps To Delete A Shape

  1. Click on the Selection Pointer tool on the drawing toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over the graphic on the map and single click the right mouse button.
  3. From the popup menu select Delete.


Steps To Cut/Copy And Paste A Shape

  1. Click on the Selection Pointer tool on the drawing toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over the graphic on the map and single click the right mouse button.
  3. From the popup menu select Cut or Copy.
  4. Move the mouse to a new location. Right-click the mouse button.
  5. From the popup menu select Paste. The object will be pasted into the new location.


Steps To Change The Drawing Order Of A Shape

By default, all graphics are drawn over the top of map layers. It is possible, however, that one graphics object may obscure the view of another graphics object. In this situation it may be necessary to change the drawing order of individual graphics objects.
  1. Click on the Selection Pointer tool on the drawing toolbar.
  2. Move the mouse over the graphic on the map and single click the right mouse button.
  3. From the popup menu select Order. Select Bring To Front to bring this shape in front of all other other graphics. Select Send To Back to move this shape behind all other graphics. Select Bring Forward to move this shape up one spot in the drawing order. Select Send Backwards to move this shape down one spot in the drawing order.
